Reviews:

“Isla Lacra” is the first novel in John Boyd’s new Denver Noles series. It is a thriller about the international drug trade and the cartels that run it. It is fast paced and full of action and intrigue.

Denver Noles is a retired Navy SEAL who is living in the Florida Keys on Isla Lacra (Scar Island) which his Uncle Harry had left him in his will. He is quite content running his bar and minding his own business until one of his employees comes to him for help.

Maria is an immigrant from Mexico whose daughter, Mariana, has been kidnapped by the largest drug cartel in Mexico. Her son Raul has also disappeared. A drug shipment that Raul was supposed to collect has gone missing and the cartel is holding his sister, Mariana, prisoner until Raul comes forth and tells them where the drugs are.

Denver gathers his former SEAL team mates together to find Mariana and Raul and bring them home safely. Little do they know they are in the midst of two powerful cartels jockeying for supremacy. The battle will take them along the gulf coast of Mexico and into the Caribbean.

The story moves at a breakneck pace and keeps you turning pages to find out what will happen next. The characters are well developed and Denver is a great hero. He is noble, kindhearted and humorous. I will be looking forward to more of his adventures.

Kate Farrell, The Kindle Book Review

This seems to be the year of the Navy SEAL with real life heroics in the news, a major motion picture starring real SEALs and numerous books from a romance anthology to several memoirs by former SEALs. ISLA LACRA fits right in. Denver and his buddies, Davy and Paul find themselves in the middle of a situation worthy of their black ops days when one of Denver’s employees, Maria, requests their help. Her son is missing and her daughter is being held captive by one of Mexico’s most nefarious drug cartels. The trio, with help from some well-placed friends, uses their vast experience to locate the son and rescue the daughter and the rest of Maria’s family…oh, and while they’re at it, they bring down the entire cartel. Missing cocaine, kidnap, torture, drug runners and SEALs-what else does one need to create a tense, action-packed thriller? Boyd has written the book with Denver narrating in a very “sitting-with-a-buddy-having-a-beer” tone. Denver comes across as humble and likable in a folksy kind of way. There is a hint at a budding romance between Denver and Maria’s daughter, Mariana that I would have liked to learn more about. I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next one.

John Boyd ROCKS!

Pamela Kelley

Been looking for an intriguing new author to read and this is it. Typically have liked Stuart Woods, Lawrence Saunders, JA Konrath who all mix a good story with a personalized character offering some self-deprecating humor, mystery, international knowledge and travels – John’s versatile background and his obvious dedication to his wife Mariana are interesting and heartwarming. I certainly recommend this enjoyable read as well as some of his other books that I am just beginning to digest. Do yourself a favor and check this author out.

Drugs, smuggling, hostages, ex-seals equal high suspense and entertainment.

Isla Lacra by John Boyd is a true thriller with plenty of twists, turns unpredictable events and dynamically exciting with loads of justifiable violence from the best protectors Navy SEALS or more actually former Navy SEALS. Navy SEALS are known for accomplishing tasks no others could accomplish to rescue a family held captive by one of the two major Mexican drug cartels.

John Boyd’s book is set in two popular Mexican resort areas which geographically makes the book easier to visualize: Cancun, Cozumel. Isla Lacra is definitely a page turner however it opening segments are complicated and a bit taxing to follow because of the transitions around the characters voices in the beginning. I found the transitioning a bit confusing but this clears up as the story continues. Perhaps it was my understanding and getting comfortable with the writing style of Mr. Boyd.

I enjoyed the book with all of the use of advanced technology and tactical pursuits during missions to free Maria’s family held captive and to fight the drug cartels that some countries governmental/ political agencies could not breakdown.

My recent renewed interest in Navy SEALS was reinvigorated as a result of the SEALS work that took down Osama bin Laden. Who can’t respect and admire a group of men who are extremely intelligent problem solvers with extraordinary stealth maneuvers while working under the radar of deadly criminals and bring them down.

In Isla Lacra the Hero, Denver Noles a sexy, strong, caring and very well respected former Navy SEALS Denver now lives in Florida and owns a bar inherited from his uncle. One of Denver’s hardworking, dedicated employees has a family problem and living in Mexico in extreme danger. Denver is a kick butt, take names later kind of man everyone wants to have supporting them if in trouble. Denver and his makeshift team consisting of retired SEALS and they manage to rescue this family used as pawns due to inside corruption by one of the two of largest Mexican drug cartels. Denver Noles is a quiet, gentle spirit, protective man making his intolerance for the mistreatment of innocent people the driving force as he create an awesome plan to recover Maria’s family. Denver’s highly respected reputation and integrity, masterful skills and held in such high regard that various government connections with powerful people in CIA/ Homeland Security, eagerly assist Noles and his team: Davy, Paul, Janice, and Jimmy, to accomplish his personal promise/ his mission to rescue Maria’s family and reunite them. Janice Wilson- Hayes is a tall, drop dead body who is intelligent, honest and pleasant personality. Denver hires her to manage the bar.

The characters in the book are all tough birds for minor characters such as the ill grandfather, grandmother, Jimmy, Maria’s daughter Mariana who has been kidnapped in Mexico.

The hits between the Rodriquez small army, his brothers and Hector Guerrero bringing the cartels to justice is more than a challenging endeavor.

Mr. Boyd does an excellent job describing the settings and the activities in the pursuit of the cartel’s drugs and freeing the family being held hostage. His dialogue between the characters is realistic and hooks the reader. As I read Isla Larca I felt as though I was sitting in front of a big screen watching and ducking and holding my breath as the exciting events were revealed. Mr. Boyd interjects a bit humor and a small touch of inferred romance but without big ceremony which may distract the reader.
The apex and resolution of Isla Lacra is a nail biter. I can see a thrilling series unfolding.

Although Isla Lacra strongly appeals to a male audience as a woman I found it thrilling and appreciated the use of intelligent language, thrills and chills and the lack of unnecessary profanity often associated with military, action packed thrillers. The violence was well placed and paramount in building a strong plot, conflict and resolution. I am impressed with Mr. Boyd’s understanding and use of highest levels of military technology and how it is utilized providing me with many “aha “moments.

Mr. Boyd has a new fan and I highly recommended Isla Lacra to all of my friends who crave action, suspense, and military tactics and fast pace read.
